BEIJING, Jan 24 (Reuters Life!) - It gives a whole new meaning to high heels.
Customs officers in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou have discovered 28 kg (60 lb) of marijuana leaves hidden in 215 pairs of shoes abandoned at the airport last year, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday.

Guangzhou, aka Canton, was first established as a place of importance under Qin Shi Huangdia's government being named the southern sea capital in 214 BC. Successive governments continually renewed the city of it's importance with it's ever growing trade value being situated at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, next to Hong Kong.
In 1517 the Portuguese landed in Guangzhou marking the beginning of Sino-European trade. In the following years, the Spanish, French, Dutch and British also came to set up shop.
On the Chinese end, a grouping of different families, known as the Hongs, was established in order to deal with and control trade with the foreign merchants. The Hong merchant class were viewed as a necessary evil by the ruling party who believed status came as birthright. None-the-less, the Hong merchants had their own status much desired by the visiting traders; that of money. At his death in 1843, the Hong merchant Huoqua was said to be the richest man in the world.
The Qing government had never been much interested in foreign trade viewing all foreigners as barbaric and uncivilized. During the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain attempted to forge an alliance with China, sending a fleet to Hong Kong with gifts for the Emperor, including examples of the latest European technologies and art.
When the British legation received a letter from Peking explaining that China was unimpressed with European achievements, and that George III was welcome to pay homage to the Chinese court, the deeply offended British government aborted all further attempts to reconcile relations with the Qing regime.
Finally, after years of trade tension, the Qing leaders decided it was enough and tried to cut trade ties with the west. Hearing of this turn of events, British merchants, in need of a way to maintain business began to bring Opium from India. Enter the Opium Wars.
Today's Guangzhou, is nothing of the sort with everyone jumping on the trade bandwagon Guangzhou is now a booming centre that still retains it's prestige as the financial, trade and administrative centre of the south.
